May Chang: A Drop of Sunshine, A Burst of Joy

Мей Чанг: Капка слънце, взрив от радост

Who knew such a little tree and such an innocent-looking flower could hold the most mesmerising scent?

If spring had a fragrance, it might be this one.

There’s something quietly magical about May Chang. It announces itself gently and lingers beautifully. One breath and you’re somewhere else.

A Fragrance That Feels Alive

May Chang (Litsea cubeba) comes from the small, peppery fruits of a tree native to Southeast Asia. The essential oil is steam-distilled, and what comes out is nothing short of radiant: lemony, soft, a little sweet, and faintly green—like lemongrass with better manners.

There’s a gentleness to it. Not the sharpness of pure citrus, but something smoother and inviting.

It’s uplifting and calming at the same time—a rare, almost paradoxical quality that we love. It’s often known as the oil of tranquillity.

The Skin Benefits We Fell in Love With

What surprised us most was how skin-friendly May Chang turned out to be. In our solid soaps, it adds more than just fragrance—it brings clarity, balance, and a fresh feel that lingers long after the rinse.

  • It’s naturally antibacterial, making it ideal for blemish-prone skin.
  • It has a mild astringent quality, helping to tone and refine without drying.
  • It’s known to help regulate oil, making it a gentle ally for combination or oily skin types.

All of that, wrapped in a scent that lifts the mood and calms the senses.

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering

May Chang is one of those hidden treasures in the world of essential oils. It’s not as famous as lavender or tea tree, but once you get to know it, it tends to stick with you—in the best way.

It’s still somewhat under the radar in aromatherapy circles. But that’s part of what makes it so special—there’s a real sense of discovery when you use it. A feeling of finding something not everyone knows about yet.

Some early studies have even explored its potential in cellular health, showing surprisingly powerful results. But even without the science, it just feels good to use—whether in a diffuser, a facial mist, or, of course, your morning bar of soap.

A Daily Ritual of Lightness

We use May Chang in one of our favourite solid soaps—a bar designed to bring lightness to your day, every day. The lather is creamy, the scent is crisp, and the experience feels like a small reset. A pause. A breath.

Even when the weather is grey or your mood is low, May Chang offers a kind of quiet encouragement: Begin again. Wash it off. Start fresh.
